Summary
This position is an entry-level Airway Transportation Systems Specialist (ATSS). All duties of an ATSS are tied to maintaining safe and efficient operating capacity of the vast and complex network or electronics systems required for the world's largest air traffic control and navigation system. ATSS personnel install, evaluate, maintain, modify and certify facilities, services and equipment that support the National Airspace System (NAS).
Responsibilities
ATSSs are responsible for various duties that contribute to providing reliable and safe FAA services to the flying public. This involves working with radar, communications, automation, and navigational aid equipment, as well as various environmental support facilities and equipment.
All ATSSs should have a foundation of basic knowledge supplemented by work experience or formal education to perform in this position such as: knowledge of basic electronic and/or electrical theory; have the aptitude for solving mathematical problems (algebra and/or trigonometry to perform electronic/electrical calculations); read and interpret technical drawings; and apply basic physics theory. The developmental ATSS must use electronic test equipment required for maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing of NAS equipment/systems as well as use proper personal protective equipment and safety procedures while accomplishing work assignments.
Qualifications
FV-F Level Based on Education: Applicants must document a 4-year course of study or at least 24 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in one of these fields: computer science, mathematics, electronics, physical sciences, information management, engineering, telecommunications, or other fields related to this position.
FV-F Level Based on Qualifications: Applicants must document 3 years of full time (40 hours per week) general work experience that provided a basic knowledge of the principles of electronics, mathematics, computers, aeronautics, or related areas, or an understanding, both theoretical and practical, of automated systems operation, integration, management, and maintenance. Experience may have been gained in occupations such as computer specialist, electronics technician, telecommunications specialist, electrician, engineer, or other work related to this position.
Newly hired ATSS's may spend a significant amount of time attending formal training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, OK.
