Description

Education: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency plus one (1) to three (3) years practical trade training.

Qualifications: General mechanical skills; small engine repair; large equipment repair; welding; operation of grounds equipment, snow removal & human relations skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

* Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on GFPS vehicles, engines, transmissions, brakes & other mechanical, electrical systems, trailers & school equipment. Works independently when possible, and makes appropriate decisions based on experience and training.
* Performs Preventive Maintenance & Repairs on all small engine grounds equipment in district.
* Identifies and reports vehicle problems requiring additional maintenance and repair, to Mech/Grounds Supervisor.
* Maintains shop facility, cleans work areas, disposes of lubricants and chemical in compliance with all safety regulations, and cleans up spills according to standard procedures.
* Enforces safety rules and regulations.
* Operates a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspects vehicles and equipment and verifies all equipment is properly maintained.
* Responds to emergencies as directed; assists with training of GFPS staff.
* Assists in the application of pesticides for the purpose of controlling weeds.
* Attends in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
* Maintains athletic field & grounds, to include repairing damage, over seeding, fertilizing, leveling of dirt & chemical application for weed control.
* Minor repairs of playground equipment and athletic field structures.
* Assist with plotting & marking of Football & Soccer Fields, & Remarking of All School District Parking Lots & Playgrounds.
* Maintains all equipment needed for maintenance and grounds
* Operates needed maintenance and grounds equipment (sand truck, sprinklers, aerial lifts, etc.) for the purpose of providing all necessary maintenance grounds processes.
* Assists with the removal of snow at all school facilities.
* Provides processes for grounds (welding, fence installation & repair, tree trimming, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that all aspects of maintenance for grounds provided in optional condition.
* Assist with repairing irrigation systems and components.
* Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (grounds damage, vandalism, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
* Supports the relationship between the Grand Forks Public School District and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with clients, visitors, and District staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and District information; follows compliance rules governing child abuse; performs related duties as required or assigned.

Skills Required:

* Skilled in inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel, and electrical problems in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
* Skilled in welding, metal fabricating, and adapting parts and tools to specific repairs.
* Skilled in safe use of operating equipment used in grounds maintenance including tractors, loaders, weed whips, mowers, power and hand tools, and chemical and lubricants.
* Skilled in using proper safety precautions, and identifying problems and emergency situations.
* Skilled in establishing and maintain effective working relations with co-workers.

Knowledge Required:

* Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, equipment, and components.
* Knowledge of methods used in a preventive maintenance.
* Knowledge of metal fabrication and welding methods and procedures.
* Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and repair standards for public transit vehicles.
* Knowledge of proper use and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk and stand. Lift sixty (60) lbs. occasionally, with the ability to reach, stand, walk, carry, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, and/or crawl. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely. Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Terms of Employment: twelve (12) months

Evaluation: Job performance will be evaluated by the Mechanic/Grounds Supervisor.
